Course Overview

This course is perfect for those who have mastered the basics of wheel throwing and are ready to take their skills to the next level. Designed for students with some prior experience, this program focuses on refining techniques, improving control, and exploring more complex forms.

You’ll work on creating larger and more intricate pieces, such as lidded jars, serving bowls, multi-part forms, and sets of cups or plates. We'll delve deeper into the principles of form and function, including how to achieve consistent shapes, improve surface finishes, and develop a personal style. The course also introduces advanced techniques like trimming, altering forms, and adding decorative elements.

Our small class size—limited to 4 participants—ensures personalized instruction and plenty of one-on-one time with the teacher. Over the six weeks, you’ll aim to complete around 6 well-crafted pieces, with a focus on both quality and creative exploration.

The studio provides a curated selection of tools( could buy if needed) and a wide variety of glazes to help you bring your ideas to life. You’ll also have the opportunity to experiment with techniques like slip trailing, carving, and layered glazing.

Whether you’re looking to improve your craftsmanship or start building a cohesive collection of work, this intermediate course will challenge and inspire you.

Collected:

Your finished pieces will be ready for collection about 3 weeks after the course ends, but sometimes it may take a little longer. We’ll email you when your work is ready. Please collect your pieces within 6 weeks of receiving the email, as we unfortunately can’t store them for longer. If you are not collected within that time, we’ll give them to charity shops due to limited shelf space.

For those who have completed this intermediate course and are interested in progressing, we also offer hand building courses—check our website for details. Alternatively, if you’d like to join our studio as a member, you can find more information online.

What’s Included:

All clay, glazes, and basic tools are provided during the class. While we encourage creativity, we ask that you only fire the pieces you truly love to support sustainability. The studio will fire 6-8 pieces per student, with each piece no larger than 12cm in diameter and 18cm in height. Larger pieces can be fired for an additional cost.

Tool Kit:

You’ll need an eight-piece pottery tool kit, which can be purchased at the studio for £8 (normally £10). You’re also welcome to bring your own tools if you have them.

Missed Classes:

We regret if you miss a class, we’re unable to offer a replacement session, but we’ll do our best to help you catch up during the next class.

We are looking forward to seeing you in the Trace Ceramics Studio!
